Lyrids, an upcoming meteor shower in April, are also one of the oldest meteor showers observed in the world today. They come from the Lyra constellation also called as Abhijit Nakshatra in Hindu astrology. Interestingly, it is also believed that Lord Rama was born in this constellation. Lyrids meteor showers can be seen from April 17 to April 26th 2025 and they peak on the nights of April 21st to 22nd. On average, one can spot about 18 meteors (shooting stars) per hour but be ready to be surprised to even see as many as 100 shooting stars per hour. The best part about this meteor shower is that it’s visible in both the northern & southern hemisphere so even if you are living in India, you can still get a chance to spot this one.
.
Next up on our list are Eta Aquarids, these upcoming meteor showers are known for their speed (unlike Lyrids). They can be seen from April 20th to May 21st, 2025. The peak nights are going to be May 3rd to 5th. For Northern-hemisphere countries (including India), the Eta Aquarids is relatively weak – only shows about 10 shooting stars per hour.
.
Perseids, considered to be the best meteor showers of the year, are prominently seen in August. They will peak on the nights of August 12th to 13th 2025 and the best part about them is their bright light which makes them more easily visible to us. This meteor shower is also prominently seen in the Northern hemisphere which makes it more favourable for a country like India.
.
Coming to one of the most beautiful upcoming meteor showers in India are Orionoids that appear every year in the month of October. These fast–moving, beautiful & bright meteor showers come from the Halley’s Comet which revolves around the sun every 76 years (next return in the year 2061). The debris stream coming through this legendary comet sprays ice & rock into space resulting in two weak meteor showers, Eta Aquarids & Orionids.
.
Last but not the least on our list of the upcoming meteor showers in India in 2025 are Geminids, probably the most powerful meteor showers of the year. One can see as many as 75 shooting stars per hour and these are more prominent in the northern hemisphere. Geminids are visible all night, with the peak occurring around 2 AM local time when the radiant in the Gemini constellation is highest in the sky. If you want to wish to increase your chances of seeing a shooting star, this is the meteor shower event you don’t want to miss.
